The Movie Night Book Club: Coraline

The first rule of this book club: nobody has to read the book.

Doors at 6:30 pm · Movie at 7:00 pm

So this is new for us: a book club where we watch the movie instead. We're putting Coraline on the big screen, with a Q&A with Lars Larsen who worked on the film, and pausing at the button-eyes cliffhanger for a live costume contest, and there will be themed drinks, popcorn and a few small surprises.

Come early and make yourself at home: the bar will be open all evening and Trolley Parton will be parked outside with books to browse.

Fancy = the Pink Palace Welcome Kit, our $15 add-on: your own copy of Coraline and a kit with your name on it, waiting at check-in.

21+ · 51 seats · Home by about 10

Ask the Animator

Joining us for the night: Lars Larsen, an animator who worked on Coraline. Yes, the actual movie.

Before the movie starts he'll be taking some of your questions... so bring the one you've always wanted to ask about how this movie was made, frame by frame. He was there for it.

Then: the movie, with an intermission costume contest judged in person by Snoots and the raffle drawing.

The Costume Contest

There are four ways to win:

Best Coraline
Show off your yellow raincoat or star sweater.

Best Other-World Anything
The Cat, the ghost children, Miss Spink, Miss Forcible or anyone else you find in the Other World.

Button Eyes on a Budget
Two buttons, a little ingenuity and the confidence to make it work.

Best Duo or Group
Bring your own Other Mother, Wybie or an entire collection of circus mice. Book clubs are highly encouraged to enter together.

Chief Judge Snoots has been briefed. He remains suspicious of the buttons but has agreed to be impartial.

Costumes are encouraged, never required. Regular clothes still get you the same movie and access to the bar.

Why Coraline? (A Note from Dani)

Before there was a bookstore in a trolley, I worked in LAIKA's art department.

Beginning The Movie Night Book Club with a LAIKA movie felt like a fun way to bring those years together with the bookstore.

I'll be there to welcome you, and then I'm mostly handing the mic to someone who actually made this movie. Excited to see you there!

Quick Questions

Do I need to read the book first?

No. The first rule of The Movie Night Book Club is that nobody has to read the book.

The Pink Palace Welcome Kit (our $15 add-on) includes a copy of Coraline, but it is yours to read before the movie, after the movie or simply admire on your shelf without guilt.

How do tickets work? Will anything be mailed to me?

Nothing will be mailed. After you purchase your ticket, your name will be added to the guest list.

When you arrive, give us your name at check-in and we'll take it from there. If you added the Welcome Kit, it will be waiting there too.

Is the event really 21+?

Yes. This event is for guests 21 and older.

What should I wear?

Whatever you would normally wear to a movie is completely fine.

Costumes are encouraged, especially if you would like to enter the contest, but they are never required. A yellow raincoat, button eyes or full Other Mother transformation are all welcome.

What is the schedule for the night?

Doors open at 6:30 pm and the movie starts at 7:00.

The 7:00 start opens with the intro and Q&A with our animator guest, then the film rolls. We'll pause once for the costume contest, raffle drawing and bar refills, then finish the movie and have everyone heading home by about 10. Your pre-event email will confirm the details.

Where should I park?

There is parking at the Idaho Film Society and plenty of street parking close by.

What should I know about accessibility?

Have an accessibility question or a specific seating or mobility need? Please contact Curbside Books before purchasing so we can confirm the details with the Idaho Film Society and help you plan your visit.

What happens if my plans change?

Tickets are refundable through October 3.

After that date, you may transfer your ticket to a friend anytime. Just send us the new guest's name before the event so we can update the list.

What happens if the event sells out?

Once all 51 seats are claimed, ticket sales will close.

This will not be the last Movie Night Book Club. Newsletter subscribers will be the first to hear what we're putting on the screen next.

So, Are You Coming?

There are 51 seats. Come dressed for the Other World, come straight from dinner, bring a date or bring your entire book club.

We'll save you a seat. Would love to see you there.
